Understanding Your Tracker's Battery

If you think of your iPhone, this type of electronic uses an internal "fuel gauge" chip, which constantly draws power to monitor how much power is left. If we built that into Gemstone™ or Cobblestone™, the battery would be empty in a matter of months.

To give you "up to 6 years battery life", we use an algorithm instead of a chip, which provides an estimate of how much battery is left. 

How We Measure

Power consumption depends on two main things every time your tracker wakes up:

Location Updates: How often the tracker is set to wake up and send its position.
Connection Time: How many seconds it takes to lock onto a satellite signal through the clouds.

Why Battery Life Varies

Battery estimates fluctuate because your environment is always changing:

Parking Indoors: Thick walls make the tracker work harder to find a signal, drawing more power.
Extreme Weather: Just like a mobile phone, freezing temperatures temporarily reduce battery capacity.

FAQ

Can you replace the battery in a Copenhagen Trackers GPS device?

Yes. Gemstone™ and Gemstone™ Bike devices feature user-replaceable battery packs that can be swapped at home in minutes. Legacy Cobblestone™ devices can be sent to our Danish service centre for an official battery replacement and firmware tune-up. Cobblestone™ 2.0 uses standard, user-replaceable AA batteries.

How do I know if my Gemstone™ battery connector is Black or White?

Open the Gemstone™ outer shell and carefully lift out the battery pack and connected circuit board. In the bottom-right corner where the battery wires connect to the board, observe the plastic connector piece. It will be either solid black or solid white. You must order the replacement battery pack matching this exact colour.

Why do Copenhagen Trackers use non-rechargeable long-life batteries instead of rechargeable Lithium-Ion?

Industrial non-rechargeable cells (such as LiSOCl₂ and Lithium AA) have virtually zero self-discharge rates, allowing devices to remain in deep sleep for years without losing capacity. Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries self-discharge rapidly, need constant battery monitoring components, and degrade more easily in cold winter temperatures.
